Stefan Bendiks is an architect / urban planner and director of the office Artgineering, based in Brussels. With Artgineering, he devises and implements design strategies for complex (inter)urban conditions with a great interest for mobility and in particular the potential of cycling for a better city. In various research and design projects, he re-interprets the relation of mobility, landscape and urban development. Furthermore, Stefan Bendiks has been teaching and lecturing on architecture, urban planning and design at various institutions across Europe. He was head of the master specialization ‘Context’ at the ArtEZ Academy of Architecture in Arnhem. In 2013/14 he was univ. professor at the Academy of fine Arts in Vienna. He currently teaches at the KOEN Institute at TU Graz.
Stefan Bendiks researches and publishes both from practice and in an academic context. In 2007 he published together with Aglaée Degros ‘N4 – towards a living infrastructure’ about the structuring effect of road infrastructure, in 2013 ‘Cycle Infrastructure’ an inspirational handbook about (fast) cycling infrastructure and in 2019 ‘Traffic Space = Public Space’, about the transformation of traffic spaces. He is also author of the study ‘Fietsland’, commissioned by the Dutch CRA and the study ‘More bike – more city’ commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment/ PBL. Publications in the academic context include the documentations ‘Bridges’ (Masterclass ULB and VUB / Brussels) and ‘Favorite(n) Arrival City’ (Academy of Fine Arts Vienna), as well as several peer-reviewed articles. Stefan Bendiks is corresponding Member of DASL (German Academy for Urban and Regional Planning). He is also an expert and ambassador for the Dutch Cycling Embassy.
The connection between urban development and transport is one of the focal points of Stefan Bendiks’ work. He is an internationally sought-after expert in this field and regularly lectures at national and international conferences. Among other things, he worked on the new cycling strategy of the city of Groningen and advised the city of Luleburgaz/Turkey on urban development and active mobility. Currently, he is the master planner of the new cycling strategy of the city of Graz.
