Preliminary Study for the Campus Development of TU Graz

The Inffeldgasse Campus is the largest location of TU Graz, situated approximately two kilometers from the historic city center. Over the past decades, the campus has been expanded multiple times in an ad-hoc manner. A comprehensive transformation is now planned, aiming to better integrate the campus into the urban fabric and ensure its sustainable future development.

Artgineering was commissioned to carry out a preliminary study accompanying the upcoming masterplan. A central part of the project was an intensive participatory process involving faculty, students, staff, and other campus users. Through focus groups and a broad online survey, concerns, needs, and potentials were identified and thematically structured – across areas such as building structure, open space and landscape, mobility, and technical infrastructure.

The results were compiled into a charter that now forms the conceptual basis for the forthcoming urban design competition. The study outlines both the current state of the campus and the vision of an open, sustainable, and well-integrated university district for the future.

This Vademecum describes the standard guidelines for quality cycling infrastructure. Guidelines are not binding standards, but should be considered as recommendations and frameworks for quality cycling infrastructure within which the designer can motivate his choices. The guidelines contribute to the creation of an environment in which cycling is safe, convenient and easily accessible. Moreover, they create conditions for the realisation of a healthy, attractive and readable public space. The guidelines in the Vademecum aim for a high-quality bicycle infrastructure, for both moving and stationary bicycles. This Vademecum is therefore a touchstone against which to measure the quality of cycling infrastructure, whereby deviations from the guidelines can only be justified.

The Vademecum is based on four principles: (1) a high-quality cycling route network as a basis; (2) an accessible infrastructure for cyclists aged 8 to 80; (3) a growing number of cyclists and an increasing diversity of users and (4) cycling infrastructure considered from the perspective of the cyclist.

The Vademecum on Bicycle Facilities is intended to be a “live” and dynamic document, which will be regularly adapted and adjusted based on new insights, developments, or responses from the different users.

Artgineering together with the VUB was commissioned by the Flemish agency AWV and Fietsberaad to provide the process, content and design.

‘Leefbuurten’ are lively, climate-robust and car-free neighbourhoods where it is pleasant to walk, cycle and live. The design of the public domain in these neighbourhoods contributes to the evolution towards safe, healthy, social and sustainable communities by transcending the mere traffic function and by offering more space to the many space requirements that our streets are confronted with. They are pleasant places to stay, tailored to the needs of young and old alike. Their layout provides space for meeting and activity, for nature and greenery, for water and trees that can temper the summer heat and drought, for healthier air and for quieter places. Cycling and walking are a matter of course. The car is not dominantly present.

The study is not (only) about cycling, it about active mobility as means to achieve vital, liveable, inclusive and healthy neighbourhoods. It addresses accessibility for all: young- old, for all genders, ethnicities and abilities. The project promotes behavioural change and formulates practical guidelines for the transformation of neighbourhoods, taking into account all users.

To realize this project, the Flemish state architect and Fietsberaad Vlaanderen together set up a collaboration. The study combines spatial planning and cycling policy, a top-down and bottom-up approach; as well as design practice and academic research. Artgineering with the support of VUB (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) and in collaboration with different municipalities, researched for inspiring examples, strategies and hands-on design principles.

This plea for ‘lively neighbourhoods, inspires municipalities and other actors who can contribute to the design and realisation of cycle friendly, lively neighbourhoods. The findings on the importance of network, proximity, aesthetics, ecology and process are bundled in a brochure with international best-practices. The study resulted in concrete follow-up projects for the actual transformation of several neighbourhoods into ‘Leefbuurten’ in Flanders.

‘Lüleburgaz bisiklete biniyor – Cycling for a better city’ is a roadmap for the conception of an Inclusive Bicycle Masterplan. It investigates how to activate the full potential of cycling for the improvement of various aspects of urban development. The project explores cycling as a catalyst for change towards a more sustainable, healthy, vital, inclusive and democratic urban environment and society.

The result of the study is much more than a bicycle masterplan for a specific city. It represents not only a traffic engineering approach, but a holistic vision addressing Hardware, Software and Orgware aspects in order to improve cycling and urban live at the same time. On the example of the city of Lüleburgaz, this book formulates recommendations and general principles for cycling in (midsized) Turkish cities. Yet the content is also relevant for smaller towns and larger metropoles in Turkey and other countries that do not (yet) have well-developed cycle infrastructure and culture.

As part of an open call of the Dutch Creative Industries Fund, the project was run by an international collaboration between designers, experts, public administrations, NGO’s and private market players. This open inclusive approach offered the opportunity to combine Dutch expertise in the field of cycling and urban planning with profound knowledge of the local Turkish context and stakeholder involvement. The design proposals and recommendations are made specific for the local context. They inspire municipalities in Turkey and abroad and function as an accelerator for the improvement of the urban realm.

In 2022, the municipality began constructing the town’s first cycle lanes. The strategic target was to construct 5 km of new cycle paths annually, but last year’s goal was exceeded: especially by creating a separate, bidirectional bicycle track that connects the train station to the city center.

Public space is essential to a vital, inclusive society and resilient cities. But how can we create more of it in our densely packed cities? The solution is just on the street: There’s a vast amount of space that can be reclaimed by transforming areas that are today still dominated by cars into truly public spaces. To do so, we have to work toward a better balance between modes of transport and urban life: that means more space for pedestrians and cyclists, less space for motorized transport of persons and goods.

Traffic Space is Public Space isn’t just another book on urban planning principles. It won’t give you a rigid set of rules. But it will introduce you to approaches and strategies that are essential to trigger a change, such as creating connections, the participative process, the revitalization of the local economy, space sharing, the metabolism and a simple aesthetic. Packed with inspiring projects from all over the world, including some from the authors own urbanism and design firm, Artgineering, Traffic Space is Public Space offers forward-looking insights into how we can increase the quality of space and life in in our cities.

Inspirational handbook for the design of cycle infrastructure

Experiments with new cycling services are appearing in cities worldwide. ‘The bicycle’ is of great value to mobility, the environment, and health. Moreover, thanks to the bike, there are enormous opportunities for spatial quality, economy, and quality of life, in particularly in cities.

Cycle Infrastructure is an inspiring handbook for anyone who engages in developing, designing, and promoting high-quality bicycle routes. The book makes a case for cycling infrastructure as an integral design challenge rather than a purely traffic-engineering task. The aim is to exploit the full potential of bicycles for the built and unbuilt environment.

The book includes international examples of cycle infrastructure, interviews with the creators of leading bike routes, and looks ahead to future innovations. A Spanish version of the book, Cicloinfraestructura (2016), was published in Colombia.
