Preliminary Study for the Campus Development of TU Graz

The Inffeldgasse Campus is the largest location of TU Graz, situated approximately two kilometers from the historic city center. Over the past decades, the campus has been expanded multiple times in an ad-hoc manner. A comprehensive transformation is now planned, aiming to better integrate the campus into the urban fabric and ensure its sustainable future development.

Artgineering was commissioned to carry out a preliminary study accompanying the upcoming masterplan. A central part of the project was an intensive participatory process involving faculty, students, staff, and other campus users. Through focus groups and a broad online survey, concerns, needs, and potentials were identified and thematically structured – across areas such as building structure, open space and landscape, mobility, and technical infrastructure.

The results were compiled into a charter that now forms the conceptual basis for the forthcoming urban design competition. The study outlines both the current state of the campus and the vision of an open, sustainable, and well-integrated university district for the future.

Competition ÖBB Areal Ostbahnhof

The Ostbahnquartier, a new neighbourhood in the Jakomini district of Graz, is being built in the immediate vicinity of the Ostbahnhof railway station and the exhibition centre. It comprises the publicly accessible Ostbahnpark and two building plots with mixed uses such as residential, retail, services, offices and catering. The focus is on public, social, creative and productive offerings.
The strategic positioning of the Ostbahnpark in the south enables the creation of a larger green space in the densely built-up neighbourhood. Transformations of the commercial areas are intended to create additional green space and better networking of the parks. A green promenade along the railway lines serves as a biodiversity and leisure axis, a green buffer between the new quarter and the historic Ostbahnhof.

The integration of existing trees and new plantings creates a predominantly green neighbourhood. Buildings form quiet inner courtyards and open up to the green promenade. An infiltration trough channels rainwater to a catchment pond.
An underground car park under Raiffeisenstrasse enables car-free living. Cycle parking spaces are an integral part of the green and open space planning. To the north, the design responds to planned traffic measures.
The building heights are orientated towards the local building structure. Openings to the green promenade and continuous building plinths along Raiffeisenstrasse shield emissions and integrate green space. PV modules on higher roofs serve as energy sources and species refuges. Lower roofs are assigned to communal uses. The Ostbahnquartier offers a lively urban experience with a diverse ground floor zone for a wide range of target groups. The openness of use allows for adaptability and continuous further development.

Competition Entry Urban Development

The Ludwigsfelder Partitur project cre- ates a seamless connection between the existing settlement and the new expansion, nestled within its surround- ing environment. The development of building areas, mix of uses, mobility, and energy concepts are designed to generate synergies with the surround- ings and allow for adaptations in the future. The expansion enhances the living quality of the aging settlement while preserving the green space as a link between old and new. Emission-free usage, walkability, climate adaptation, social integration, and future viability are central principles. Traffic is shifted to the periphery, while public trans- portation is integrated through central routes. Active mobility is promoted, and parked vehicles are organized within neighborhood garages. Distinctive key spaces, diverse rooftop landscapes, and mobility hubs enrich the neighbor- hood. Various housing forms, private and communal zones, as well as neigh- borhood houses ensure diversity and adaptability. A thoughtful energy and climate concept ensures sustainabil- ity. The focus on commemorative sites, sound insulation, and diversity of use shapes the neighborhood as a vibrant and forward-looking district.
The Ludwigsfelder Partitur project relies on an advanced mobility con- cept. The expansion of the settlement is accessed via a new perimeter road for motorized individual traffic, while local traffic is directed through efficient and space-saving pathways. A well-devel- oped network of attractive pedestrian and cycling routes promotes connectiv- ity within the neighborhood and beyond. Public transportation options, such as buses and potentially trams in the long run, utilize the neighborhood boulevard as a primary route. Mobility hubs stra- tegically located throughout the neigh- borhood offer a range of services, from bicycle rentals to car-sharing and logis- tics services. These hubs encourage multimodality and intermodality, ensur- ing environmentally friendly mobility without the need for a personal car. The entire concept enhances active mobil- ity, reduces motorized traffic within the neighborhood, and skillfully integrates it with public transportation and the surrounding recreational areas.

The guiding idea of the project “RE/UP/ MIX MBA” is to transform the isolated Max Becker Area (MBA) in Ehrenfeld into a diverse and interconnected urban community. This is to be achieved by creating new ecological, infrastructural, energetic, and functional connections within and beyond the area. The vision aims to establish strong identities in the form of identity-defining neighborhoods and to leverage existing urban patterns and industrial fragments as starting points for neighborhood development. The framework of activity fields emphasizes the overlapping of commerce, education, and residential functions to create a vibrant mix of uses and lifestyles. By consciously connecting residential and work areas and designing a diverse public space, a dynamic urban atmosphere is intended to emerge. The project development takes into account ongoing transformation and flexibility, including the integration of existing facilities such as an upgraded REWE store as a local supplier with a market hall.

The Plärrer is Nurembergs central traffic junction. In the course of history, it has been transformed several times and is dominated today by public and private transport. In an invited competition, new ideas for the traffic organisation and the spatial quality of the Plärrer were developed.

The design renews the entire area from façade to façade. It reorganises functions and spaces, and creates the spatial conditions for sustainable (public) transport. Generous waiting areas at the tram stops are protected from weather by green and solar roofs, a new building hovering above the tram and subway station structures the extensive open space.

The reorganisation of the space also creates opportunities for pedestrians and cyclists. The four-lane traffic axis in the central part of the project area will be transformed into a car-free boulevard. This will promote active mobility and strengthen the local economy. In analogy to the tram stops, elongated platforms are proposed as free spaces, that can be developed for seating, art, resting areas, water plays, etc. in a participatory process.

The Plärrer becomes a place between transit and lingering. It will be integrated into the landscape structures and becomes a hub between the old, western and southern city districts. As a key element in Nuremberg’s ring structure, the Plärrer remains a junction of different traffic flows, yet will be is strongly unsealed, improving the urban microclimate.

The B14, an inner-city highway, is now a relic of the past. Stuttgart aims to transform this through-road into a dynamic urban space – one that prioritizes pedestrians, cyclists, green areas, and reduces car traffic. Reimagining the B14 as a river with tributaries, islands, and banks leads to smarter traffic management, with reduced vehicle inflows and park-and-ride options at key points. Rather than pushing cars and people underground, motorized traffic should be reduced, and underpasses replaced with pedestrian crossings at street level, creating open, lively public spaces. Slower speeds can improve both traffic flow and safety. Future mobility hubs – combining public transport, bike-sharing, and micro-mobility – will reduce the need for cars. Climate resilience is also key: planting 2,000 trees by 2050 will help combat climate change. Ultimately, the B14 should evolve from a disruptive highway into a thriving, connected urban space, with intersections becoming vibrant public areas. Lateral thinking literally transforms the B14 from a barrier into a vital connector within the city.

Refurbishment of a square and adjacent streets in Woluwe-St. Pierre, Brussels

The question: how can Dumon Square again become a central meeting place in the Brussels municipality of Woluwe-St. Pierre? The situation: the square is densely populated on market days, but used as a car park on other days.

Artgineering interprets this urban space as an interaction between meeting and lingering, traffic and commerce. This intervention aims to balance these uses. Strengthening the square’s spatial quality and atmosphere has, therefore, been the most important consideration.

The loop of the tram’s route is what formed the square’s oval shape. A wide, surrounding concrete bench accents Dumon Square’s characteristic form. The square inside the oval is dedicated to diverse public applications. A generous tree plan provides this location’s greening and connects to the neighbourhood’s existing tree planting.

Dumon Square becomes a shared space. Tram, car, and bicycle routes continue around the oval, but pedestrians have priority. Short-stay parking is possible outside the oval; and, during a transition phase, at the request of the square’s shopkeepers within the oval. The redevelopment advocates the varieties of use (lingering, traffic, commerce) are mutually inclusive.
