Stefan Bendiks is architect/ urban planner and director of ARTGINEERING, an office for research and design at the interface between urban development and mobility, based in Brussels and Graz/ Austria. Stefan Bendiks researches, designs and implements strategies and projects for complex urban conditions with a particular interest in active mobility (cycling and walking) and its potential for a better city. With ARTGINEERING he realizes various transformations of public spaces, such as the Place Dumon in Brussels and the Park Belle-Vue with the velostrada F24 in Leuven, that was awarded the prize for the best cycle infrastructure in Flanders in 2021. The refurbishment of the “Grote Markt” in St. Niklaas, the largest market square in Belgium, is currently under construction.
As an expert of the Dutch Cycling Embassy, Stefan Bendiks advises cities and municipalities around the. Among others, he worked on the BRT cycle masterplan in Dakar/ Senegal and the new cycling strategies for the city of Groningen/ Netherlands and Luleburgaz/ Turkey. He also regularly holds international Think Bike Workshops for the Dutch Cycling Embassy. An important focus of this work is capacity building in local administrations and among planners and to sensitise policy makers to issues of active mobility and integrated urban and transport planning.
Furthermore, Stefan Bendiks has been teaching and lecturing on urban planning and mobility at various institutions across Europe and the US. Among other positions, he was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and the Graduate School of Design at Harvard. Currently he teaches at the TU Graz.
Stefan Bendiks researches and publishes both from practice and in an academic context. He published ‘N4 – towards a living infrastructure’ about the structuring effect of road infrastructure, ‘Cycle Infrastructure’ an inspirational handbook about cycling infrastructure and ‘Traffic Space = Public Space’, about the transformation of traffic spaces. He is also author of the study ‘Fietsland’ for the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure, ‘Leefbuurten’ for Fietsberaad Flanders and the new Flemish bicycle design guidelines ‘Vademecum fietsvoorzieningen‘ for AWV. He also publishes in an academic context and has written several peer-reviewed articles. Stefan Bendiks is corresponding Member of DASL (German Academy for Urban and Regional Planning).
The connection between urban development and mobility is one of the focal points of Stefan Bendiks’ work. He is an internationally sought-after expert in this field and regularly lectures at national and international conferences.
