L50 Bridges
In the context of the restructuration of the regional railroad network, INFRABEL together with the Brussels Bouwmeester launched a competition to design two bridges for pedestrians and cyclists, crossing the railway line L50 in Berchem-Sainte-Agathe and Ganshoren. The sites are situated on the border of Brussels with the Flemish region. The new bridges will replace level crossings and link the city to the rural area around it and the regional bicycle network.
The winning design of Artgineering together with IPV Delft turns the bridges into more than just functional crossings. The bridges cross the railway in a continuous movement. To go up, to go down, to cross will become a spatial experience. Design wise the two bridges are family: by their curved lines, colour, and the same material, the bridges show a strong coherence. The main material used is corten steel: resistant, low-maintenance and with a natural patina, that will give the structures a timeless character. The project comprises refurbishments of the public space around the landings of the bridges and the train platforms.
